If you're hankerin'
for a hunka cheese, look no further.
We've got some great breakfast spots for you in both northern and southern Cali.
Nor Cal:
We're huge fans of huge breakfasts, so bring an appetite and a friend or two. These places will fill you up.
Soleil Cafe in El Sobrante, 3550 San Pablo Dam Rd. (510) 758-6134
Big American breakfasts with the friendliest staff. Fresh fruit and good coffee. Vegetarian dishes, also.
The cafe is roomy. A cross between a diner and dining hall with european detailing.
The Alley Cafe in Pinole, 2265 Pear St. (510)724-5312
Go here only if you want to be stuffed. The owners, Corey and Connie are sweethearts and make pancakes bigger than your head. Seriously. And the omelets are too big for one person. Delish! Be sure to get there before 11AM or you'll be waiting a little while for your food.
Smaller, cozy cafe tucked onto little old Pear St.
Rick and Ann's in Berkeley, 2922 Domingo Ave, Berkeley (510)649-8538
Located across the street from the Clairemont Hotel, Rick and Ann's is a great place to take someone. Even if the place is packed, you can park yourself outside on a bench and order a cup of coffee and a pastry while you wait. Its menu makes it worth the wait.
Lots of hearty faire and variety. We love the red flannel hash.
So Cal:
The Cottage in La Jolla, 7702 Fay Ave. (858) 454-8409
"Southern Cal cuisine" which means fresh fruits, healthy muffins, creative omelets, etc.
Very cute corner cottage with lots of outdoor seating. If you have to wait for a table, you can grab some complimentary coffee and coffeecake while you sit outside. Great staff.
Java Kai in Del Mar, 1555 Camino Del Mar (858) 481-8390
Great hawaiian coffee flavors and many breakfast treats: bagels, muffins, quiche, Acai bowls, (pronounced uh SAH hee, and known as the world's healthiest fruit)
This coffee shop is located on a quaint corner of Del Mar and is across the street from the beach. Friendly staff. Great hawaiian gifts, also.

Ohh. Yeah, The Alley pancakes rock so hard! Pull out a dinner plate for an example size...the pancake fills that plate.
Good lord.
I love all the Nor Cal places the best, but...hey! What about Culley's in Poway?
I know what I'll be dreaming of tonight!
